I leave this to that man of wisdom and wit, Donald Rumsfeld:

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we knowThere are known unknowns. That is to saythere are things that we now know we don’t knowBut there are also unknown unknowns. These are things we do not know we don’t know.” ~ Donald Rumsfeld

Rumsfeld’s epigram deserves thinking over. Knowledge involves self-appropriation, i.e. our conscious self enters into it. Also, when we assert something, we ought to know whether it belongs to a narrow, well-defined circle of meaning (like the density of housing in the suburb where we live) or pertains to a wider, encompassing sphere (like our country’s place in the family of nations, many of them unstable). What we think we know ought to stand at least implicitly in relation to such fields of meaning some of which we are at least partly ignorant of. We don’t do enough checking of our knowledge.
