Auntie at Royal Ascot in the 1890s

With all the talk of Black Caviar going to Royal Ascot to race, it reminds me of a family story.

My great- uncle and aunt, William and Anne Whowall, were in England in the late 1890s and William’s brother-in law, a Colonel Moia, married to his sister,Sarah, asked Anne to join him in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot.

When she arrived there Moia was reputed to have said to her: “Anne you are the only lady here.”

Moia it was said enjoyed a drop. My grandmother can remember him visiting Melbourne staying with Auntie and Uncle and pouring himself a stiff whisky at 6 in the morning.
