We were all thrilled with his last adventure novel: ‘Twixt Semites and swastikas: Temlett Conibeer’s greatest challenge’,  and we can only wait with expectation for the adventures of Temlett Conibeer in a country wrapped in mystery in “At the West End: Temlett Conibeer in West Papua”.

I was fortunate to glimpse a tantalizing and intriguing short story by Marke recently: “Misogyny, if ever there was”. This could well prepare us in terms of style and description for his next novel.

There’s always considerable charm in the writing of A.C.T. Marke. His Victorian values shine throughout his works. His Holy Grail and his quest for the perfect woman are engendered with his admiration for Her Majesty’s Officers of the Royal Navy. In fact in real life he is known to his friends as the Commander.

With Temlett Conibeer Marke has created a character as English as the Book of Common Prayer and the Authorized King James Version, but Temlett is not a mere reflection of his creator. He is a character who stands alone. There is nothing of the  roman à clef in any of Marke’s novels.

I expect that there will be a rush for copies of his coming novel after publication, and it is suggested that you get in quick, and not be disappointed!

A coming treat for A.C.T. Marke’s readers!

October 10, 2013 at 4:51 am (A.C.T. Marke, Commentary, Famous Old Wellingtonians, Indonesian New Guinea, Love in a hot climate, Love on the Run, Temlett Conibeer, Twixt Semites and swastikas: Temlett Conibeer's greatest challenge, West Papua)

We know that Andrew Marke enjoys exploring remote places, and he loves the company of cats while researching the Victorian age. But now his readers are about to be enthralled with his latest novel: AT THE WEST END

Temlett Conibeer, and his friend Erik, find themselves in West Papua, a province of Indonesia. Erik is onto something that could make the both of them extremely wealthy. The challenging and formidable problems in the province with the Indonesian brutality all add to an intriguing and Machiavellian story line.

With this as a background, Temlett’s romance with a blue-eyed Dutch blond makes the novel a chronicle that is both creative and picturesque.

So hold your breath, the work is not quite finished at this stage, but when it comes out, be sure to buy a copy.

It’s come to my mind that the Commander is now working on his magnum opus in the wilds of Tasmania!

We can only wait with bated breath for this outcome!

The subject matter of this work is unknown to me, but if the Commander maintains his usual brilliance we will indeed be in for a rare treat!

Keep your eyes on this blog for further updates.

The works of A.C.T. Marke in pride of place in Peter Johnson’s bookshelf

March 31, 2013 at 6:04 am (A.C.T. Marke, Book review, Commentary, Famous Old Wellingtonians, Fiction, Love in a hot climate, Love on the Run, Temlett Conibeer, Twixt Semites and swastikas: Temlett Conibeer's greatest challenge)

One of the few pleasures I still have in my old age is my yearly visits to my good friend Peter Johnson’s place in Wewak, PNG. You can imagine how pleased I was recently when I saw on entering his house that in his bookshelf in pride of place were the complete works of A.C.T. Marke.

Added to the deep pleasure I felt was the knowledge that it was I who had donated the works to Peter.

One can imagine the joy some of the famous benefactors to such establishments like the Smithsonian Institution or the British Museum must feel when they see objects that they have given on display. A joy very similar to what I felt seeing the works of Marke in Peter’s house.

I was pleased to hear what Peter Johnson said of the novels and the author: “It’s my considered opinion that Andy Marke in time will eventually attract a cult-like following.”

For those unfamiliar with the literary merits of A.C.T. Marke and his books see the links below, and a comment about cult fiction:

“Cult fiction is fiction which has attracted a large following of loyal fans and supporters. In addition to cult fiction, it is also possible to see cult authors, authors who have attracted and held fans who eagerly await their new publications. Cult fiction varies widely in terms of subject and even quality, with the literary value of some works of cult fiction being called into question by book critics who have managed to resist the fan mentality.

“Often, cult fiction breaks new ground in some way. Perhaps the author uses an innovative narrative style, or brings up edgy issues which have not been widely discussed. Cult fiction may include material which is considered explicit for the time in which it is published, attracting prurient interest from readers who like things a little racy. It may also be controversial: some of the most esteemed works of cult fiction have been banned at some point or another. Authors may explore the human condition, write terrifying visions of dystopian societies, or simply tell a good story.”

Two distinguished Francophiles!

November 25, 2012 at 1:29 am (A.C.T. Marke, Commentary, Love in a hot climate, Love on the Run, Temlett Conibeer, Twixt Semites and swastikas: Temlett Conibeer's greatest challenge)

Subject:Letter to Dr J.P. Priestley (copy)

24 November, 2012
Dr J.P. Priestley
c/o Monsieur Terence Pfafflin
Sydney 2001
My dear Dr Priestley
May I say, as the editor of the above mentioned blog, how much our readers have enjoyed your contributions in the past!
I’ve taken the liberty of researching something of your illustrious academic life. Your distinguished career includes the occupation of chairs in some of Europe’s finest universities. You are a famous Anglophile and Francophile! With Monsieur Pfafflin, another celebrated Francophile, you employ French as your main medium of communication.
Given all of this, I realize, that what I’m asking of you might be considered by you as somewhat beneath what you would usually do – a mere actor in a film!
As you can see from the enclosed we are trying to find a suitable person to take the part of Temlett Conibeer, in a film of A.C.T. Marke’s novel, Twixt Semites and swastikas.  You will also notice  from reading the reviews that this fine work is in the same category as War & Peace !
So, please give this request your serious consideration!
I am, dear Sir, your admiring and obedient servant,
David Andrew de Bérigny
P.S. Don’t let my French name fool you – I don’t speak French, and I have little knowledge of French culture, though I admire both! I look to our mutual friend, Monsieur Terence, to address these deficiencies in me!
